There are many reasons to train your dog. You have taken on the responsibility for another life and you want to enjoy your dog's companionship for his entire life. In order to do this you must be able to live together in harmony. You want your dog to be able to get along with friends and relatives. Training will allow you to do this. Training will also strengthen the human-canine bond. The main reason dogs are surrendered to shelters is behavior problems - the owner and dog can not live together. Behavior problems are the biggest cause of death in dogs, ususlly euthanasia in a shelter. Another reason is purely financial. Many insurance companies will not cover households with dogs or will charge a higher rate, however, having a trained dog may make a big difference in your premium cost.
