How do I find a good trainer?
There are several sources right in your neighborhood for finding a good trainer for your dog..  The first is your veterinarian, ask him if he can recommend a good obedince school.  Other sources are groomers, neighbors and friends that have trained their dogs.  Check the Trainer Referal pages of the NADOI and APDT web sites.   When you get some names of obedince schools, call them and ask questions about their training methods, experience, are they members of any professional training organizations.  Ask them if you can come and watch a class (if not, cross them off your list).  Beware of trainers that "guarantee" their training.  The effectiveness of training relys heavily on how much time you can spend practicing with you dog.  Be careful with  training "clubs" and pet store trainers.  Many times these groups do not have experienced people that can deal with special problems and may have had limited experience training dogs.  Be wary of anyone that claims to be licensed or certified.  There are NO national or state cerification or licensing programs at this time.  NADOI has a lengthy written test that must be completed and approved before membership is allowed and APDT has a wealth of educational material supplied to its members (APDT is currently working on a  "certification" program)
